NEWS: I'll be starting my own research group in July 2010 as a faculty member of the Center for Infectious Disease Dynamics at Penn State University. I'm looking for postdocs - if you're interested in joining the group, please send me your CV and the name of two references at salathe@stanford.edu.

I'm a Branco Weiss Fellow and currently a postdoc in Marc Feldman's group at Stanford University. Broadly speaking, I'm interested in biological change. Most change in biology is driven by evolutionary processes, and understanding these processes is in my view on of the most fascinating challenges. Some change, however - for example the spread of infectious diseases - is not directly driven by evolutionary processes, but rather by ecological and social processes. These processes are equally fascinating, and one could argue that they are even more pressing in our day and age. At Stanford, I'm trying to work in both areas, and my current focus is on epigenetic inheritance and the spread of infectious diseases.

Scientific path
I studied Biology at the University of Basel with Dieter Ebert, Tad Kawecki, Michael Doebeli and Steve Stearns. I then did a PhD with Sebastian Bonhoeffer at the ETH in Zurich. Since 2008, I am a PostDoc in Marc Feldman's group at Stanford. I've been a Branco Weiss fellow since 2008.
